Speaker-1: Prof. Noriyuki Satoh
Presently a professor at Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST), Japan. He graduated from Hirosaki University in 1969, Niigata University receiving a master’s degree in 1971, and from the University of Tokyo for his Ph.D. in 1974. For more than 35 years, he conducted research on ascidians at the Kyoto University Department of Zoology. At OIST he launched and leads the Marine Genomics Unit since 2008 and extended his studies from ascidians to other marine animals, such as the corals that abound in the marine environment around Okinawa. To date, he had published more than 250 articles with more than 10,000 total citations and h-index of 54 (Scopus). One of his remarkable finding was on disclosing the molecular mechanisms of notochord formation and genome decoding of marine invertebrates, including tunicates, cephalochordates, and hemichordates. His contribution in the filed have been recognized with numerous honors and field, including Prize of Zoological Society of Japan (1993); Inoue Prize for Science (1994); Prize of Evolutionary Society of Japan (2004); Toray Science and Technology Prize (2004); Alexander Kowalevsky Medal (St. Peterburg Academy of Science, Russia) (2005); Medal with Purple Ribbon (2006) and Edwin Grant Conklin Award (2010).
